Corrosion is the deterioration of a metal as a result of chemical reactions between it and the surrounding environment. Both metal and the environmental conditions determine the form and rate of deterioration. Corrosion is a big menace to the economy of any country; many studies have been dedicated to estimate the cost of corrosion. NACE estimates that global cost of corrosion to be US$2.5 trillion, equivalent to roughly 3.4 percent of the global Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The study found that implementing corrosion prevention practices could result in global savings of between 15-35 percent of the cost of damage, or between $375-875 billion (USD).
